So many of us love and cherish John 15, and I am right there with you. Many times, John 15 is my “go to” read. As I am preparing for an upcoming conference based on this favored chapter, it never ceases to amaze me how many times I read it; I see something new. Along with John 15, I read the Book of 1 John. John delves deeper into the meaning of abiding and the effects it should make and display in our lives. In 1 John, the word “abide” appears over twenty times; making it a vital focus of his teaching.
What does John 15 say about abiding?
- Abide in Me (Jn 15:4)
- Let My words abide in you (Jn 15:7)
- Abide in My Love (Jn 15:9)
Abide means to remain, dwell, continue, tarry, and endure. We are to enjoy our time in His presence and not rush through it as another task. Pull up a chair and stay for a while with Jesus. Commune with Him before others and listen to His voice through the reading of His word.
And when we do these things, we will:
- Experience His joy (Jn 15:11)
- Lay down our lives for others (Jn. 15:13)
- Enjoy friendship with Jesus (Jn 15:14)
- Wisdom from God will be increased (Jn.15:15)
- Bear much fruit (Jn.15:16)
And whatever He is asking you to accomplish, do, or experience today, remember—Apart from Him you can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Draw on His strength, His love, and His wisdom to step out with confidence, knowing He goes before you and is waiting for you wherever He is asking you to go.
As you and I Abide with Jesus, it will require greater actions from us. Dwelling in His presence should not only impact our hearts, but also our actions, conduct, and bring glory to God.
Actions of Abiding:
- Walk and live as Jesus did (1 Jn. 2:6)
- Love for your brother (1 Jn. 2:10)
- His word abides in you (1 Joh. 2:14)
- Eternal life (1 Jn. 2:24-25)
- His anointing (Holy Spirit) teaches us (1 Jn. 2:27)
- Gained confidence (1 Jn. 2:28)
- Won’t practice sin (1 Jn. 3:9)
- Love one another (1 Jn. 3:11)
- Shows love by actions (1 Jn. 3:17-18)
- Abides in His truth (1 Jn. 3:24, 4:13-15)
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
(1 Jn. 4:15)
The practice of abiding is a lifetime commitment to seeking God and experiencing His presence. The more we abide in Him, the more He will expose Himself to you. Where you and I position God will be how He relates to you. The God of the universe invites us into an up-close-and-personal relationship.
Abide in Me, and I in you. (John 15:4a)
Won’t you pursue, seek, and ask for more of Him with all your heart?
