When was the last time you were struck with the awesomeness of God?
I set out on my daily walk listening to Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas, when I was quickly convicted by the author to stop listening and begin observing God’s beauty around me. But it came in the most unconventional way—through the eyes of my 10 month old puppy, Baxter. If I had not stopped listening and started watching, I may have missed the wonder of God.
You see, everything is new to our furry friend, so it doesn’t take much for him to be amazed. This particular day, it wasn’t only Baxter that was stricken, but I was astounded, too. I observed Baxter’s amazement in the flutter of the littlest white butterfly that accompanied us along the trail. His eyes were glued to every move it made as we zig-zagged trying to catch it.
While I saw his amazement, I thought to myself, “Do I have the same awestruck wonder of God as Baxter does with his new finding?” Yes, I am so thankful and enjoy His beautiful creation, but am I even more in awe of the Creator?
After thirty-eight years of walking with the Lord, do I still stand in awe of who He is? Does His Word still bring newness and refreshment to my soul? Does His still small voice ring in my ears?
Aren’t there times our walk with God can become stale?
What do you do when this happens?
I am glad you asked 😉
Yes, a dryness in our walk with God happens to the best of us, and we may need to make some adjustments.
For me, I had to remove myself from the place where I normally studied God’s Word and enjoyed my daily devotions. You see, too many distractions started to creep into that sacred space, from my laptop and phone, to the books I was reading. I found myself interested in something besides His Word. So, I needed to change my location and made my way to our downstairs basement with only my Bible, a devotional, pen, and pad in hand. I then proceeded to commit to reading Psalm 119.
I remember heading down the stairway and all I kept saying was, “God, I want to be awestruck by You!”
Little did I know what Psalm 119:161 said, “. . . But my heart stands in awe of your words.”
It begins with being awestruck with His Word.
His Word brings:
- Purity (Psalm 119:9)
- Delight (Psalm 119:16, 77)
- Revival (Psalm 119:25)
- Wonder (Psalm 119:27)
- Strength (Psalm 119:28)
- Salvation (Psalm 119:41)
- Knowledge (Psalm 119:66)
- Wisdom (Psalm 119:98)
- Joy (Psalm 119:111)
- Light (Psalm 119:130)
- Awareness (Psalm 119:161)
- Peace (Psalm 119:165)
- And more. . .
Finding delight in reading His Word, will give you a foundation for everything else of importance. It will instruct you, guide you, make you aware of His awesomeness and bring you delight in the ordinary and extraordinary things of life. The wonder of God will give you power beyond your own strength, joy outside your circumstances, and confidence to do all God asks you to do (Psalm 138:3). You will watch Him do above and beyond all that you ask or think according to the power that works in you (see Ephesians 3:20).
When was the last time you were awestruck by the wonder of God?
