Friendship. . .we all long for deep meaningful friendships. Some friends last a lifetime, while others are for a season. But there is one that is constant—Jesus.
Every time I read John 15:14-15, I am always so thankful I have a consistent friend in Jesus, “You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
From the very beginning, God had a relationship with Adam and Eve that found them walking in the garden in the cool of the day (see Genesis 3:8). God created man for the enjoyment of a walking relationship that involved friendship, companionship, dialogue, intimacy, joint decision-making, mutual delight, and shared dominion.
And, He continues that same friendship with you.
God longs to walk with you, which is why His arms of grace have been pulling you into a closer walk with Him. The secret place with God is where you develop a walking relationship with Him. Even though men began to call upon the name of the Lord in the early days (Genesis 4:26), Enoch was the first man to uncover the true delight of walking with God. He found something even Adam didn’t experience. He pressed into God until he learned how to commune with God through every facet of life.
Enoch may have walked 365 years with God, but I hope you are sensing Him asking you to walk 365 days with Him (Genesis 5:22-24). Yes, every day! As you continue to seek Him with all your heart, the more you will be enlightened with His truth and convicted by His desires. You’ll gain strength to overcome adversity and develop more sensitivity to bestow grace on others. Yes, the Lord wants to have fellowship with you, but He will not force a relationship upon you. The choice is yours for the taking.
It will need to be your daily choice to seek Him and allow His guidance in the quietness of your moments with Him. When you walk with God, you enter the dimension where God unfolds the secrets of His kingdom (see Deuteronomy 29:29) and His will for your life. “The unfolding of His words give light, it brings understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130).
What does your walk resemble in your daily life?
Is it buffed, shiny, and bright? Or does it have a dull luster in need of a good shine?
“A man’s wisdom illumines him and causes his stern face to beam” (Ecclesiastes 8:1b), so “do not be in such a hurry to leave Him…” (Ecclesiastes 8:3).
God of the universe invites you to an up-close-and-personal relationship with Him. “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chronicles 16:9a).
The promise of His friendship is yours for the taking.
