Are you looking for God’s favor in your life?
I know there have been times I wished for God to wave a wand over me and His favor would fall on me like rain on parched ground. Oh, wouldn’t that be nice? But, that’s just wishful thinking. The promise of favor comes when we focus on the three steps written in Proverbs 8:34-35, “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts. For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord.”
Yes, to attain everyday favor, the Scripture before us states three prerequisites: listen, watch daily, and wait.
Jesus is the gateway to the favor of God.
Without God’s grace there would be no favor—no blessing from God. “For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8 NIV).
Once you have received the gift of life through Jesus’s saving blood, His favor doesn’t stop. God delights in blessing those who seek Him. He wants to bestow His favor on you daily—everyday favor.
Everyday favor is found in your one-on-one time with Him—Focusing on Him. The sweetness of His presence will be enough, and the blessings that flow out of your time with Him will be icing on the cake.
There’s a desperation in the writer of Proverbs 8:34-35 for more of God. A desire to attain wisdom from above. Do you have this same desperation—that “He must become greater and greater as I must become less and less” (John 3:30 NLT)?
May you and I have this same desperation as we focus our eyes on Him through these 3 steps to everyday favor.
1. Listen
Listening is something you and I will need to be deliberate about practicing. It’s a learned art. The way we listen to God is by daily reading His Word and applying it’s truths, commandments, and wisdom to our life. Just as Samuel, one of the greatest prophets of Israel, said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10b). May this be the cry of your heart. Don’t just merely hear Him as noise, but attentively listen.
My people, hear my instruction; listen to the words from my mouth. I will declare wise sayings; I will speak mysteries from the past—
Psalm 78:1-2
2. Watch Daily
Are you earnestly knocking on the door of Jesus’s heart? “God loves those who love Him; and those who diligently seek Him will find Him” (Proverbs 8:17). Don’t allow God’s Word to become commonplace where you go through your morning devotions in rote fashion without really listening to what God wants you to hear from Him and watching for Him throughout your day. Rather, come to Him each day with a desire to have your heart stand in awe of His words (Psalm 119:161). Never stop becoming awestruck by God. Watch for Him daily!
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8
3. Wait
As you listen to His still small voice, watch daily and wait expectantly may you humble yourself before Him giving your heart the right posture to listen “For God does not delight in the strength of the horse; He does not take pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord favors those who fear Him, those who wait for His lovingkindness” (Psalm 147:10-11). Be steadfast in your commitment to know Him better then watch and wait for our awe-inspiring God to bring favor on your life. During the wait, God molds you into the fullness of your destiny and will take you to depths of trust beyond your own understanding. Finding Jesus in the wait is like discovering a treasure brighter than the most sparkling of diamonds. He will bring forth a refining that will happen nowhere else but in the wait. So, embrace the season of wait and meet Jesus in the middle of it. He is good to those who wait.
The Lord is my portion, says my soul,“Therefore I have hope in Him.”
The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.
Lamentations 3:24-25
So, friend, press on to know the Lord better and better each day (Hosea 6:3) and watch for His favor with expectancy.
